Reinvent Yourself: Start a New Career
Posted by Shelby Sanders on Tuesday, September 30, 2011

There are times when you need reinvent your career. Especially when you find yourself stagnant or feel like you are in a rut. You become complacent in your job with no direction and begin to feel like you need something more. That something more may be as simple as taking classes at your local community college or enrolling as a part-time or full time student. Nothing fulfills you more than learning.

Twenty years ago you attended high school, graduated, went to college and that was pretty much the only way to further your education. Most of us are aware of the typical undergraduate and graduate degrees. Times certainly have changed.

Today there are many options available to further your education.  Many colleges and universities offer online degrees and certificate programs addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees. Just recently several Historically Black College and Universities have gotten on board and started offering degree programs online.

Online courses allow you to boost your career while you work and take classes without leaving your home. Instead of attending classes on campus, you attend virtual classes via the internet. Students interact with their instructor and classmates via web discussion forums, e-mail, chat sessions, and phone calls. In addition, many local colleges offer Ed2go which are online, noncredit courses on computer subjects, personal and professional enrichment classes and more. Students must have computer access and internet access in order to these online courses.

There are also online websites that offer video tutorials on how to use different software. These video tutorials allow you to learn new skills, as well as sharpen your skills as you keep up with workforce demands.

Online courses allow you the freedom of when to do your classwork. This could be done after housework is completed or children are tucked in for bed. These courses are self-paced allowing you to determine what time works for you.

Certificate programs prepare you to complete a particular task or educate you in a specialized area. For example a Social Worker with an undergraduate degree or master’s degree may become certified in mental health and substance abuse counseling.  Many find these programs helpful throughout their careers since they can enhance or replace degree programs. They also allow you the opportunity to update your knowledge base.

These are just a couple of options available to anyone wishing to enrich their lives. The key thing to remember is options are out there. You just need to select one that aligns with your goals.
