UP, UP AND AWAY!

Posted by Rev.Nathaniel Bullock on Monday, May 22, 2011

Rev. Nathaniel BullockProverbs 2:2-3 reads this way. "My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you. Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding"

When I was a young boy growing up in Raleigh, N. C. I was fascinated with airplanes as was many boys my age. Of course I liked playing cowboys and Indians, trucks and trains. There were many other things that captivated the imagination of boys like me. Flight on the other hand, well, that's what dominated my thoughts and dreams.

I remember my father taking me on Sunday evening drives to the Raleigh/Durham Airport. We would watch the planes take off and land. My father would hold me on his shoulder so I could see those big DC-3's land and taxi to the ramp. Those planes really fascinated me. So at the ripe old age of five, I determined in my heart that some day I would learn too fly.

My break came while on a military tour in Korea. I found a flying club there which I joined. EUREKA, I was about to become a pilot. I began my training one Saturday afternoon. My instructor was a Korean national by the name of Mr. Lee. His English was a bit rough but our communication was not that bad.

The club had five Cessna 150 aircraft and they were all in good condition. After Mr. Lee demonstrated some basic techniques, he let me take the controls on our first flight together. Flying that craft was the bomb. The flight lasted about two hours and I was on the controls for half that time. On subsequent flights I learned emergency procedures, like how to handle the craft in the event of an engine failure. Mr. Lee cut the power and showed me how to get the craft on a good glide slope, locate a safe landing zone and began engine restart procedures. Mr. Lee went through the process twice and gave me the controls. My control of the craft was a bit shaky but I got through it with good guidance from my Instructor.

Like a good instructor for flying lessons, we need a qualified counselor too help us navigate through life. We need a Mr. Lee to teach us how to restart when the obstacles that we come up against in life seem to stop us cold. Just like my first flight at the controls of that Cessna 150, it would have been disastrous for me too take off without my instructor. So it is with life in that it would be ill-advised to try and go through life without a qualified counselor.

There are three people that we need in our life to guide and direct us. We need a FAMILY DOCTOR, we need a FAMILY LAWYER and we need a FAMILY PASTOR.

The family Pastor is the one who counsels us. He/She is the one who is there to handle weddings. They are our spiritual advisers. They are there with us in times of grief and in times of need.

Don't try to go through life trusting your own intellect and feelings. God gave us His written word to guide us and Pastors too help us navigate life. Find a good bible centered church and watch your life take a turn.
